Chapter 13: Building A New Life
Their unique relationship evolved incredibly naturally after that emotional night on the couch.
They were incredibly careful to maintain strict, flawless professional boundaries while inside the glass walls of Horizon Marketing. But outside the office, they gradually, beautifully built a real life together.
Victoria proved to be a remarkably patient, deeply loving presence in Lily’s young life. She never once tried to erase or replace Sarah’s memory. Instead, she focused entirely on creating her own unique, unbreakable bond with the child.
Six incredibly happy months later, the three of them were walking slowly through the Boston Public Garden on a brilliantly crisp, colorful autumn Saturday.
Lily was running far ahead of them along the paved path, excitedly throwing breadcrumbs to the aggressive ducks in the pond.
Victoria suddenly stopped walking. She turned to Mark, her face betraying an uncharacteristic, intense nervousness that immediately put him on edge.
“Mark, I received a phone call yesterday,” Victoria began, her hands shoved deeply into the pockets of her wool coat. “I have been officially offered a massive position on the board of directors for a major, global tech company based out in San Francisco.”
Mark felt a sudden, freezing cold knot of pure anxiety form in his stomach.
“San Francisco?” Mark repeated, the words tasting like ash. “It would mean stepping entirely back from your day-to-day operations as the CEO at Horizon.”
“Yes,” Victoria nodded slowly.
“You’re leaving Boston,” Mark whispered, feeling the incredible life they had built together begin to crumble.
Victoria took a deep, shuddering breath. She stepped closer to him, her eyes searching his panicked face.
“That entirely depends on you, Mark,” Victoria said firmly. “And it depends on Lily. I do not want to leave you. I don’t want to leave either of you. Ever.”
She reached a trembling hand into her coat pocket.
“In fact,” Victoria said, her voice shaking with adrenaline, “I was deeply hoping we might strongly consider making this beautiful arrangement of ours entirely permanent.”
She pulled her hand out of her pocket. Resting in her palm was a small, elegant black velvet box.
Mark stared blankly at the small velvet box, completely paralyzed by shock. He looked up at Victoria’s beautiful face. She looked incredibly vulnerable, wildly hopeful, and vastly more open than he had ever seen her in the three and a half years he had known her.
“Are you… are you actively proposing to me?” Mark asked, utterly astonished by the reversal of traditional roles.
Victoria laughed softly, a beautiful, nervous sound that drifted away on the autumn wind. She opened the small box, revealing a simple, elegant platinum band.
“I strongly believe that I am,” Victoria smiled, tears brimming in her dark eyes. “It is not a very traditional approach, I’m afraid. But I have never been a very traditional woman.”
“But what about your massive career?” Mark stammered, trying to process the magnitude of the moment. “Horizon Marketing is your entire life’s work. You built it from nothing.”
“It was my life’s work,” Victoria agreed gently, stepping closer and taking his free hand. “But I have recently discovered that there are vastly more important things in this world than being a lonely CEO. The company will continue to thrive under brilliant new leadership.”
She paused, a sly, thoroughly corporate smile touching her lips.
“I was actually thinking that you might finally be ready for that specific challenge, actually. I think you would make a brilliant CEO,” Victoria said. “And I can easily serve on the new tech board entirely remotely, consulting from Boston as needed.”
Mark was completely speechless. He was entirely overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the incredible sacrifice she was casually offering, all just to stay by his side.
“I love you, Mark,” Victoria said simply, her voice ringing with absolute, unwavering certainty. “And I love Lily with my entire heart. I want to build a family with you both. If you will have me.”
Before Mark could even formulate a coherent response, the sound of rapid footsteps approached them. Lily came sprinting back down the paved path, immediately noticing the open velvet box resting in Victoria’s hand.
“Is that a real ring?” Lily gasped excitedly, her eyes wide as saucers as she looked rapidly between the two adults. “Are you finally going to be my stepmom?”
Victoria slowly knelt down to the cold pavement, bringing herself exactly to Lily’s eye level.
“I would be incredibly honored to be your stepmom, Lily,” Victoria said softly, her voice filled with deep emotion. “But I will only do it if both you and your dad really want that.”
Lily looked up at her father, her young face turning incredibly serious and profound.
“Dad,” Lily said loudly, grabbing his hand. “Do you remember when you accidentally sent Victoria that goodnight text message by mistake?”
Mark laughed wetly, wiping a tear from his cheek. “I remember it very well, princess.”
“Well,” Lily declared proudly. “Mom always used to say, ‘There are absolutely no accidents in life. There are just beautiful opportunities that we don’t recognize at first.'”
Mark felt fresh, hot tears spring to his eyes at the sudden, beautiful echo of Sarah’s personal philosophy. He looked down at Victoria, kneeling on the path. This extraordinary, brilliant woman had entered their broken lives through a simple, humiliating corporate mistake, and she had completely transformed their entire world with her fierce, unwavering love.
“Yes,” Mark said, his voice thick with overwhelming emotion. He dropped to his knees right beside Victoria, pulling both her and Lily into a massive embrace. “Yes to all of it.”
