Chapter 5: The Heir’s Return
Clara burst through the basement door into the main hallway.
She didn’t run for the front door.
It was locked with a heavy digital security code she didn’t know.
Instead, she dragged Leo straight up the grand marble staircase toward the master suite.
“Where are we going?” Leo cried, completely out of breath.
“To see your grandpa,” Clara panted, pushing her burning legs to move faster.
They burst into Arthur’s massive bedroom and Clara violently slammed the heavy oak door shut.
She quickly threw the heavy brass deadbolt just as Richard reached the top of the stairs.
“Open the door, Clara!” Richard screamed, pounding furiously on the thick wood.
“I will kill both of you!”
Clara ignored the booming threats and pulled Leo toward the hospital bed.
Arthur was awake, his breathing shallow and incredibly forced.
His cloudy eyes slowly focused on the terrified little boy standing at the foot of his bed.
Arthur let out a loud, broken sob.
“William?” Arthur croaked, reaching out a trembling hand.
Leo looked at Clara, completely unsure of what to do.
“Go to him,” Clara urged softly, gently pushing Leo forward.
Leo walked to the edge of the bed and placed his tiny, dirty hand into the old man’s palm.
“I am Leo,” the little boy whispered.
Arthur pulled the boy’s hand to his lips and kissed it violently, weeping openly.
“My boy,” Arthur cried. “My beautiful boy.”
Suddenly, a massive crash echoed through the room.
Richard had returned with a heavy fire axe from the hallway glass case.
The sharp blade smashed violently through the thick wooden panel of the door.
“You can’t hide in there forever!” Richard roared from the hallway.
Clara panicked, searching the room for any kind of weapon.
She grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the bedside table and stood fiercely in front of the bed.
Arthur looked at Clara, his eyes suddenly sharp and full of absolute authority.
“Nurse,” Arthur wheezed, pointing a shaking finger at his bedside drawer.
“Open it.”
Clara dropped the lamp and quickly yanked the wooden drawer open.
Inside was a glowing red panic button connected directly to the private estate security and the local police.
“Push it,” Arthur ordered.
Clara slammed her fist down on the heavy red button.
Instantly, massive security sirens began screaming throughout the entire mansion.
Strobe lights flashed outside the windows, painting the dark room in aggressive bursts of blinding white light.
The axe stopped swinging at the door.
“No!” Richard screamed from the hallway, his voice cracking with absolute panic.
He knew it was over.
Within exactly three minutes, the flashing red and blue lights of five police cruisers surrounded the Hamptons estate.
Clara held Leo tightly in her arms as heavily armed officers finally broke down the bedroom door.
They found Richard sitting on the floor of the hallway, covered in wine and blood, completely defeated.
Life has a funny way of bringing the darkest secrets into the absolute brightest light.
Greed can turn men into absolute monsters, willing to sacrifice their own flesh and blood for a bigger bank account.
But courage doesn’t require a badge or a billion dollars in the bank.
Sometimes, the most powerful force on earth is just an ordinary person who refuses to walk away when they hear a cry for help.
