The Millionaire Kissed The Cleaning Lady To Stop An Arranged Marriage, But Her Next Move Left High Society Speechless – PART 10

Chapter 10: The Terrace Confession

That evening, the Chicago sky turned a bruised, beautiful purple.

Mia was finishing her final task of the day—wiping down the granite kitchen island—when she heard soft, instrumental jazz floating in from the outdoor terrace.

Curious, she dried her hands on her apron and pushed the heavy glass doors open.

Alexander was standing on the terrace, adjusting the volume on a small vintage record player. He had lit dozens of flickering pillar candles, casting a warm, golden glow over the stone patio. Two crystal glasses of red wine sat on a small wrought-iron table.

“What is all this?” Mia asked, her heart doing a nervous flip in her chest.

“Practice,” Alexander said smoothly, turning to face her. “For Saturday’s dinner. My mother will undoubtedly expect to see us dance together. We need to look convincing.”

Mia snorted, crossing her arms. “Oh, right. ‘Practice’. Because nothing says ‘I’m casually dating my boss’ like an incredibly romantic, candlelit setup on a billionaire’s terrace.”

“Do you know how to dance?” he challenged, completely ignoring her sarcasm.

“A little,” she admitted. “My mom taught me the basics in our living room when I was little. You?”

“Mandatory ballroom lessons throughout my entire childhood,” Alexander sighed, extending his hand toward her. “It was part of the standard heir-education package. May I?”

Mia hesitated. Every survival instinct in her brain was screaming at her to turn around and walk back into the kitchen. But her heart was a traitor.

She slowly reached out and placed her hand in his.

Alexander gently pulled her closer. He placed his right hand firmly on the small of her back, lacing the fingers of his left hand with hers. The heat radiating from his palm sent a shiver straight down her spine.

They started moving slowly, swaying to the sultry rhythm of the saxophone.

“You dance well,” Alexander murmured, his voice rumbling in his chest.

“So do you,” Mia replied, trying desperately not to look at his lips. “Those expensive childhood lessons obviously paid off.”

“It’s not the lessons, Mia,” he said softly. “It’s the partner.”

Mia swallowed hard, her pulse racing so fast she was terrified he could feel it. “Alexander…”

“Mia, I need to tell you something,” he interrupted, stopping their movements. He didn’t let go of her waist.

“What is it?” she whispered.

Alexander looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with an intensity that made her knees feel weak. “What I feel for you… I have never felt for anyone else in my entire life.”

Panic instantly flared in Mia’s chest. “Alexander, you barely even know me.”

“I know enough,” he insisted, pulling her a fraction of an inch closer. “I know your insane courage. I know your absolute loyalty to your family. I know how you aren’t afraid of anyone in my world.”

“Please stop,” Mia pleaded, pushing weakly against his chest.

“I won’t,” he countered fiercely. “You make me want to be a better man, Mia. Every single day.”

“You’re just confusing gratitude with something else!” she argued desperately. “I helped you with your mother, and you’re just—”

“It’s not gratitude, Mia. It is so much more than that.” He leaned his forehead against hers, closing his eyes. “I am entirely, hopelessly falling in love with you.”

The words hung in the night air, heavy and world-shattering.

Mia’s heart pounded a frantic rhythm, but a massive wave of absolute terror crashed over her. This couldn’t happen. It was impossible.

“I… I need to go,” she stammered, tearing herself out of his grip.

“Mia, wait!”

She didn’t look back. She bolted off the terrace, ran through the kitchen, and sprinted all the way to her small room in the staff quarters, slamming the door behind her.

She collapsed onto her narrow bed, covering her face with her trembling hands. Her mind was violently spinning out of control.

For weeks, she had successfully convinced herself that this was strictly a transaction. That Alexander was just an arrogant boss, that she was just doing this for Nico’s surgery money, and that every single touch was purely pretend.

But when he looked at her on that terrace… when he confessed his love…

“The problem is, I’m starting to really love him too,” she whispered to the empty room, tears finally spilling over her cheeks.

And that was the most terrifying realization of her life.

Alexander lived in a world of galas, multimillion-dollar mergers, and ruthless family expectations. She was a Latina cleaner from the South Side of Chicago. Sooner or later, reality was going to violently crash down on them, and he would choose someone from his own world.

When that inevitably happened, Mia knew her heart wouldn’t just break—it would be completely obliterated.

Have you ever run away from a relationship because you were absolutely terrified of getting your heart broken? Did you regret it later?
