CHAPTER 15: THE FINAL BETRAYAL
The cold, hollow barrel of the suppressed handgun dug into the center of Sarah’s trembling forehead.
The man she had grieved for five agonizing years now stood ready to blow her brains out in a dark concrete underpass.
“I didn’t want to do this the hard way, Sarah,” Mark whispered, his voice devoid of human emotion.
“Hand me the silver drive right now, or I will pry it from your dead hands.”
Sarah stared deeply into his dark, calculating eyes, desperately searching for even a fraction of the sweet husband she used to know.
There was nothing left inside him but toxic, blinding greed.
“You are a psychotic monster,” Sarah spat, ignoring the lethal weapon pressed against her skin.
“I am a visionary,” Mark corrected sharply, pulling the heavy hammer of the handgun back with a terrifying metallic click.
“I sacrificed my family to build a criminal empire, and I am not going to let a stubborn waitress ruin my masterpiece.”
If the father of your child was fully prepared to murder you for a silver hard drive, how far would you go to protect your little girl?
“You forgot about the blinking red light, Daddy,” Lily announced softly from the dark back seat.
Mark flinched slightly, his cold eyes darting toward the eleven-year-old girl sitting completely still in the leather seat.
“I watched you turn the dead-man’s switch off on the barge,” Mark argued, keeping his heavy gun aimed squarely at Sarah’s head.
“I turned the primary tracker off so the bad men would stop shooting at us,” Lily explained with flawless, chilling logic.
“But I turned the secondary emergency beacon back on right before we climbed into your warm car.”
Mark’s face drained of all remaining color as he snatched the heavy silver drive from Sarah’s hands.
He flipped the cold metal casing over, staring in horror at the tiny, rapidly blinking red strobe light hidden on the bottom.
“You stupid little brat,” Mark roared, raising the heavy handgun to aim it directly at his own daughter.
Sarah didn’t think; she reacted with explosive maternal fury.
She lunged across the heavy center console, burying her fingernails into Mark’s dark eyes.
Mark screamed in agony, wildly firing the suppressed handgun blindly into the armored roof of the sedan.
The deafening shot shattered the interior dome light, plunging the luxurious car into terrifying blackness.
Before Mark could recover his lethal aim, the world outside the vehicle exploded into chaotic violence.
A heavily armored tactical truck slammed into the driver’s side of Mark’s sedan at terrifying speed.
The horrific sound of crunching steel and shattering bulletproof glass echoed through the empty concrete underpass.
The impact deployed every single airbag in the sedan instantly, pinning Mark against the steering wheel.
Sarah gasped for air, the heavy white fabric of the airbag crushing her chest against the passenger door.
“Get out of the car right now,” a brutal, familiar voice roared from the wreckage outside the shattered driver’s window.
Vance reached his bloody hands through the jagged glass, grabbing Mark by his expensive black overcoat.
The dying billionaire had somehow survived the federal assault and tracked the secondary beacon directly to their exact location.
Vance ripped Mark through the shattered window, throwing the traitorous accountant heavily onto the cold concrete floor.
“I watched you drown in the bay,” Mark choked out, spitting blood as he scrambled desperately backward across the pavement.
“You cannot drown a man who is already dead inside,” Vance growled, his white shirt soaked in dark, heavy blood.
Sarah kicked the passenger door open, dragging Lily out of the smoking, destroyed armored sedan.
She collapsed onto the cold pavement, clutching her daughter as she watched the two ruthless monsters tear each other apart.
Vance hurled his massive body onto Mark, raining brutal punches down on the accountant’s perfect face.
But Vance was dying, his physical strength fading with every drop of blood spilling from his torn shoulder.
Mark easily blocked a sluggish punch, driving his own knee into Vance’s open gunshot wound.
Vance roared in blinding agony, collapsing onto his side on the wet concrete.
“You were always an arrogant fool, Vance,” Mark laughed cruelly, wiping thick blood from his split lip.
Mark stood up slowly, recovering his dropped suppressed handgun from the shattered glass on the floor.
He aimed the lethal weapon down at the gasping, bleeding mafia boss who had just sacrificed everything to save a waitress.
“Now I am going to finish exactly what Victor started five years ago,” Mark promised, pulling the trigger back.
“Drop the gun right this second,” Sarah screamed, her voice echoing with terrifying authority.
Mark froze, slowly turning his arrogant head to look directly at his terrified, soaking wet wife.
Sarah planted both feet firmly on the concrete, aiming Vance’s discarded heavy black handgun directly at Mark’s chest.
“You don’t have the physical strength to pull that trigger, Sarah,” Mark mocked lightly, a toxic smile crossing his bloody face.
“You are just a sweet, helpless mother who faints at the sight of a dead spider.”
“I was a helpless mother yesterday,” Sarah corrected sharply, her freezing hands gripping the heavy weapon with iron determination.
“Today, I am the woman who is going to erase you from our lives.”
Would you pull the ultimate trigger on the man you once loved if it was the only way to ensure your child lived to see tomorrow?
“Put the gun down, Sarah,” Mark commanded, taking a slow, terrifying step toward her.
Sarah did not blink, did not hesitate, and did not shake.
She squeezed the heavy metal trigger with every ounce of her remaining, battered strength.
The massive handgun roared like a cannon in the enclosed concrete tunnel, spitting a massive flash of blinding yellow fire.
The heavy bullet struck Mark directly in his right shoulder, spinning his body around before he collapsed heavily onto the pavement.
His suppressed weapon skittered across the concrete, out of his desperate, bleeding reach.
Mark screamed in shock, clutching his shattered collarbone as dark blood ruined his expensive coat.
“You actually shot me,” Mark gasped, staring up at his wife in terrifying disbelief.
“You have been dead to me for five years anyway,” Sarah stated coldly, refusing to lower the smoking weapon.
The overwhelming wail of dozens of heavy police sirens suddenly flooded the entire concrete underpass.
Blinding blue and red strobe lights painted the scene as massive armored FBI vehicles blocked both tunnel exits.
“The real federal agents are finally here,” Vance wheezed, struggling to sit up against the ruined tire of the armored sedan.
“You need to take that silver drive directly to the lead agent right now.”
Sarah looked down at the dying billionaire, tears of exhaustion spilling over her bruised cheeks.
“They are going to arrest you and lock you away forever,” Sarah whispered, her heart breaking for the ruthless monster who saved them.
“I belong in a concrete cage, Sarah,” Vance admitted softly, a genuine smile crossing his pale, bloodstained face.
“Give them the encrypted ledgers, clear your own name, and disappear into a brand new life.”
Lily walked slowly over to the bleeding mafia boss, kneeling onto the cold pavement beside him.
She reached out with her tiny, freezing hand and gently wiped a streak of dark blood off Vance’s bruised cheek.
“Thank you for fighting all the bad monsters in the dark,” Lily whispered, her copper eyes filled with innocent gratitude.
“Thank you for hearing the hidden music, little one,” Vance replied, closing his heavy eyes as the heavily armed agents swarmed the tunnel.
Sarah pulled Lily tightly into her arms, stepping away from the bleeding men and raising the silver hard drive into the air.
The terrifying, violent nightmare was finally over.
