My Ex Tried to Get Me Deported. So I Married the MVP Quarterback.

The Substitute Bride

The roar of the stadium was deafening. “Max, you’re the Steel Panthers MVP! How are you feeling after your first preseason match since the injury?” a reporter yelled, shoving a microphone into Max’s face. Max flashed his signature, million-dollar smile, but his eyes were scanning the crowd. He wasn’t looking for his manager, Trevor, nor his teammates. He was looking for her.

But Chloe wasn’t on the sidelines. She was currently being cornered in the damp, echoey quiet of the locker room showers by her ex-boyfriend, Dylan—the man who had taken Max’s place during his injury—and his new fiancée.

“You followed me here?” Dylan sneered, his imposing frame blocking Chloe’s exit. “You’re cheating on me with your ex?” his fiancée shrieked, grabbing Chloe’s arm.

“I’m just a janitor here,” Chloe said through gritted teeth, trying to pull away. “Dylan cornered me. I want nothing to do with him.”

“Oh, please,” the fiancée scoffed, her heavily manicured fingers digging into Chloe’s skin. “You’re nothing special. You’re just a black-market worker who was hoping to marry him for a green card. Without Dylan, you’ll be deported. Enjoy your expired visa, trash.” She shoved Chloe hard against the wet tiled wall.

“Hey.”

The voice cut through the locker room like a physical blow. Max stood in the doorway, his broad shoulders filling the frame. The stadium lights filtered in behind him, casting him in shadow. He didn’t look like the smiling MVP anymore; he looked lethal.

“Get your hands off her,” Max commanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous rumble.

Dylan scoffed, stepping forward. “What is this to you, Max? Why are you messing around with the janitor?”

Max closed the distance in three long strides, grabbing Dylan by the collar of his jersey and slamming him against the lockers. “I don’t appreciate you insulting my fiancée,” Max said, his eyes burning with cold fury.

Dylan froze. The fiancée gasped. Chloe’s heart stopped.

“Your… fiancée?” Dylan stammered. “You’re joking. A superstar like you?”

“I don’t joke,” Max said softly, releasing Dylan with a shove. He turned to Chloe, offering his hand. “Come on, darling. We have a wedding to plan.”

The lie saved Chloe from being fired and deported that day, but it created a massive, inescapable black hole.

“You didn’t have to do that,” Chloe whispered later, sitting in the passenger seat of Max’s sleek sports car. “I appreciate the rescue, but immigration will deport me when they find out we aren’t really married.”

Max kept his eyes on the road. “Then we’ll get really married. Just on paper. You get your green card, and you help me keep my manager off my back about settling down. Win-win.”

Chloe stared at him, stunned. Max was the golden boy of American football. He was wealthy, gorgeous, and adored by millions. She was an undocumented immigrant cleaning toilets to survive. But desperation tasted like ash, and she swallowed her pride. “Okay,” she agreed softly.

The charade began. Max moved her into his sprawling, fortress-like estate. He bought her designer clothes, claiming it was for the “image,” but the way he looked at her when she wore them—his gaze lingering, heavy with unspoken tension—made her skin heat.

But the fairy tale was fragile.

Eliza, the captain of the cheerleading squad and the coach’s daughter, despised Chloe. Eliza had been aggressively pursuing Max for years, convinced she was the only woman worthy of him. When she discovered Chloe—a former janitor—was living with Max, her jealousy turned violent.

Eliza orchestrated a campaign of relentless bullying. She forced Chloe to do hundreds of push-ups during practice, locked her in a freezing, wet locker room overnight until Chloe caught a severe fever, and spread vicious rumors that Chloe was a gold-digging escort.

Max, however, was a terrifyingly protective force of nature.

When he found Chloe shivering and locked in the bathroom, he fired his complicit housekeeper on the spot. When Eliza’s father, Coach Sam, benched Max for skipping practice to care for Chloe, threatening to sell Max’s contract, Max didn’t argue. He just smiled.

“You’re acting like you own the place, Max,” Coach Sam sneered in the manager’s office. “But I decide who plays.”

“Actually, Sam,” a man in a sharp suit said, stepping into the room and sliding a thick folder onto the desk. “Max is the new owner of the Steel Panthers. I’m his legal advisor.”

Coach Sam’s face drained of color. Max fired him immediately, promoting the assistant coach and demoting Eliza from captain to the back of the cheer line.

The power dynamic shifted, but Eliza’s rage only festered.

The tension snapped at the team’s victory gala. Eliza, seething with humiliation, cornered Chloe. “You think you’re so special in that dress?” Eliza sneered, holding a glass of red wine. “I know your secret, Chloe. You married him for a green card. When the media finds out, Max will be ruined. And you’ll be deported.”

Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs, but she didn’t back down. “Go ahead,” Chloe challenged, her voice steady. “Tell them. See if Max cares.”

Max appeared behind Chloe, wrapping a strong, protective arm around her waist. “Is there a problem here?” he asked, his eyes locked onto Eliza with chilling intensity.

“She’s using you, Max!” Eliza cried, desperate.

“I know,” Max said smoothly. “And I let her. Now, get out of my sight before I have security throw you out.”

The ultimate test of their fake marriage arrived unannounced.

Chloe was sitting in the living room, folding laundry, when the doorbell rang. Standing on the porch was a sharp-eyed woman in a grey suit, flashing an ID badge. “Immigration Services. We received an anonymous tip regarding the authenticity of your marriage. I need to conduct a surprise inspection.”

Panic clawed at Chloe’s throat. Eliza.

The agent moved through the house with ruthless efficiency, inspecting their closets, their bathroom, and finally, their bedroom. She paused, picking up a small, locked box from Max’s nightstand. “What’s this?”

“Evidence,” Max said quickly, stepping into the room, fresh from the shower. “Ongoing investigation. Can’t let you handle it.”

The agent narrowed her eyes. “I need you to answer a few questions. Separately. When did you propose?”

“On a Tuesday, a few months ago,” Max answered smoothly without missing a beat. “Three days before that, I measured her ring size secretly while she was sleeping.”

The agent scribbled in her notepad. “You don’t seem to have any photos as a couple.”

Max walked over to a heavy oak bookshelf and pulled down a thick photo album. He opened it, laying it flat on the bed. Chloe gasped.

The album was filled with photos of Chloe. But they weren’t recent. They were from two years ago. Photos of her laughing at the coffee shop where she used to work. Photos of her cleaning the bleachers. Candid, beautiful shots.

“I’ve liked her for a long time,” Max said softly, looking directly at Chloe, his heart completely bare in his eyes. “There was a time when I was benched. Injuries, poor performance. I wanted to quit. But every day, she brought me ice for my bruises. Her smile… it’s the most beautiful, genuine thing I’ve ever seen. My coach lost faith in me, but Chloe never did.”

The immigration agent closed her notepad, her harsh demeanor softening. “Thank you for your cooperation. Best wishes to you both.”

When the door clicked shut, the silence in the house was deafening. Chloe turned to Max, tears welling in her eyes. “You… you’ve liked me for two years?”

“I was an idiot,” Max whispered, closing the distance between them. “I was afraid of getting my feelings hurt, so I hid it. When I saw Dylan cornering you that day… I couldn’t stand it anymore. The marriage might be fake on paper, Chloe, but it’s always been real to me.”

He reached out, his large hands gently cupping her face. “I love you. I want this to be real.”

Chloe leaned into his touch, a sob escaping her lips. “I want it to be real, too.”

But Eliza wasn’t finished. Driven to madness by her rapid downfall, she executed one final, desperate act of revenge.

The next afternoon, Chloe received a text from the coach, asking her to fetch some pom-poms from the equipment shed. When Chloe walked into the small, windowless concrete room, the heavy steel door slammed shut behind her. The lock clicked.

“Enjoy the heat, you bitch,” Eliza’s voice hissed through the thick metal. “Sit there and think about everything you’ve stolen from me.”

The ventilation was off. The summer sun beat down on the concrete shed, turning it into an oven. Within an hour, Chloe was drenched in sweat. Within two, she couldn’t breathe. She banged her fists against the door until they bled, screaming for Max. But the stadium was empty. The darkness began to close in.

[Ending]

“Where’s Chloe?” Max demanded, storming into the locker room. The victory celebration had started, but his wife was missing.

A terrified junior cheerleader pointed a shaking finger toward Eliza. “I… I saw Eliza lock her in the equipment shed hours ago.”

Max didn’t wait. He sprinted across the field, his cleats tearing up the turf. He reached the shed, his heart hammering a frantic, terrifying rhythm against his ribs. He grabbed a heavy metal crowbar from a nearby maintenance cart and smashed it against the padlock. Once. Twice. The metal shattered.

He threw the heavy door open.

Chloe was lying motionless on the concrete floor, her lips pale, her breathing shallow.

“Chloe!” Max screamed, dropping to his knees and pulling her limp body into his arms. “Chloe, stay with me! I’ve got you!”

She woke up in a sterile hospital room, the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor grounding her to reality. Max was sitting beside her, his head resting on her hand, his shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

“Max,” she whispered, her voice rough and dry.

His head snapped up. His eyes were red-rimmed, his face pale with exhaustion. He let out a broken, relieved sound, pressing his lips to her knuckles. “I thought I lost you,” he choked out. “I thought I’d never see you open your eyes again.”

“I’m safe,” Chloe murmured, reaching out to brush a tear from his cheek. “You saved me.”

“I’m never letting you out of my sight again,” Max vowed fiercely. “Eliza has been arrested. She’s facing attempted murder charges. She’s never going to hurt you again.”

Weeks later, the stadium was empty, bathed in the soft, golden light of the setting sun. Chloe stood on the fifty-yard line, wearing a stunning, custom-made white dress. Max stood in front of her, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo. The press was gathered in the stands, cameras flashing, but Max only had eyes for her.

“I thought the field would be the most romantic place,” Max said softly, his voice echoing across the empty stadium. “It’s where I first really saw you. Where you first saved me.”

He slowly dropped to one knee, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket. He opened it, revealing a massive, flawless diamond ring.

“I want everyone to know you’re my wife,” Max declared, his voice thick with emotion. “Ever since I met you, I’ve only gotten happier. I promise to protect you for the rest of my life. Chloe… will you really marry me?”

Chloe looked down at the man who had given her everything—not just a green card, not just wealth, but a love so fierce it had saved her life.

“Yes,” Chloe whispered, tears of absolute joy spilling down her cheeks. “Yes, I will.”
