CHAPTER 13: THE UNDERGROUND VAULT
The secret staircase was completely pitch black and smelled deeply of damp concrete.
Clara practically carried Leo down the narrow steps, her free hand gripping the silver handgun so tightly her knuckles ached.
Her breath echoed loudly in the cramped space, a ragged, terrified sound.
They finally reached the bottom, stepping out into a massive, heavily armored underground garage.
Julian’s bulletproof SUV sat waiting in the center, keys already in the ignition.
Clara buckled Leo securely into the back seat, signing a quick promise that everything was going to be fine.
She shut the heavy door and turned around, aiming the gun directly at the staircase exit.
The silence in the garage was absolutely deafening.
Every second stretched into an eternity of agonizing suspense.
Suddenly, a loud, heavy bang echoed from the stairwell door.
Clara gasped, raising the gun higher, her arms shaking violently.
Someone was trying to kick the reinforced steel door open from the other side.
“Julian?” Clara screamed, her voice echoing wildly off the concrete walls.
There was no answer, only the terrifying sound of metal groaning under extreme pressure.
With a final, horrific screech, the door was violently kicked open.
A man stumbled through the doorway, covered entirely in blood and struggling to stay on his feet.
Clara squeezed her eyes shut, her finger tightening firmly on the trigger.
“Clara, don’t shoot,” a rough, exhausted voice groaned from the shadows.
