Chapter 6: The Unplanned Passenger
Back in Boston, Mark settled seamlessly back into his rigid routine with Lily. However, he found himself thinking about Victoria constantly.
Their professional relationship had irrevocably evolved into something substantially warmer. There were regular office check-ins that frequently, naturally strayed far beyond work topics. Occasionally, she would send him links to articles about early child development, or forward emails about weekend activities in Boston that might somehow interest Lily.
One rainy Tuesday evening, as Mark was standing in his small kitchen preparing a simple pasta dinner, his cell phone rang. The caller ID flashed Victoria’s private number.
“I am so sorry to bother you at home,” Victoria began immediately when he answered. “But there has been a sudden development with the Westfield account.”
“Is everything okay?” Mark asked, turning the stove burner down to a low simmer.
“They want to aggressively move up the timeline for the second phase of the campaign,” Victoria explained, the stress evident in her voice. “Which means another mandatory trip to Chicago next week. I know it is incredibly short notice, Mark.”
Mark sighed, leaning heavily against the kitchen counter. He glanced at the colorful cartoon calendar pinned to the refrigerator door.
“Actually, Victoria, Lily has her mid-winter school vacation next week,” Mark said rubbing his temple. “I was heavily planning to take a few days of paid time off to be with her.”
There was a long, heavy pause on the other end of the line. Mark could practically hear the gears turning in Victoria’s strategic mind.
“I see,” Victoria said softly, sounding genuinely disappointed. “Well, we could try to brutally reschedule with Westfield. Or perhaps I could just handle this specific rollout meeting alone.”
Mark looked across the room. Lily was sitting on the living room rug, building a massive, chaotic tower out of colorful plastic blocks. An impulsive, crazy idea suddenly sparked in his mind.
“Or,” Mark found himself saying, “what if Lily just came with me to Chicago?”
“Excuse me?” Victoria asked, sounding utterly surprised.
“I could easily extend the business trip by a couple of days,” Mark explained rapidly, his confidence building. “I can make it a fun mini-vacation for her after the corporate part is done. She has been begging to ride on a real airplane.”
He held his breath, terrified he had just crossed a massive professional line with the CEO.
“Unless you deeply think it would be entirely unprofessional,” Mark added quickly, ready to retract the entire idea.
“Not at all,” Victoria said instantly, her voice brightening significantly. “In fact, it aligns absolutely perfectly with our new family-friendly company policies. I will personally have my assistant arrange for a much larger, family-friendly hotel suite for you.”
After they hung up, Mark walked into the living room and explained the grand plan to Lily. The little girl was absolutely ecstatic about the upcoming adventure.
“Will I get to meet your boss?” Lily asked, her blue eyes wide with pure excitement. “The one who helps you with all your tricky work problems?”
Mark was completely taken aback. He hadn’t realized how often he had been mentioning Victoria’s name in the apartment.
“Maybe,” Mark smiled, sitting on the rug next to her. “She will probably be at the big meetings, too.”
Lily nodded with intense, adorable seriousness. “I really want to thank her for helping you, Dad. You definitely smile a lot more when you talk about work now.”
Children’s raw, unfiltered perceptiveness never ceased to absolutely amaze him.
