Part Nine: The Negotiation
Three days later, Laura stood in the ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
She wore a black sheath dress. Surgical scrubs had been replaced by heels that could double as weapons.
Her hair was down.
Her face was calm.
Her hands were steady.
She had spent the last seventy-two hours preparing. Reading files. Memorizing names. Learning every detail of Elena Moretti’s operation that Ethan’s intelligence network could provide.
She knew that Elena was ruthless. Smart. Patient.
She also knew that Elena had one weakness.
She underestimated everyone who wasn’t armed.
Ethan stood beside her. Clean-shaven now. Suit pressed. Dragon tattoos visible above his collar like a warning.
But Laura could see the tension in his jaw.
The way his fingers flexed at his sides.
“You don’t have to do this,” he murmured.
“Yes, I do.”
“Laura.”
She turned to look at him.
“Ethan, I’ve been invisible my whole life. That was my secret strength—until I decided I didn’t want to be invisible anymore. Elena Moretti thinks she can use me. She’s about to find out what happens when the invisible girl decides to be seen.”
The ballroom doors opened.
Elena Moretti walked in.
She was stunning. Tall. Blonde. Dressed in white like she was attending a wedding instead of a war.
Behind her, four bodyguards fanned out.
Laura didn’t flinch.
Elena stopped ten feet away. Her eyes swept over Ethan with contempt. Then they landed on Laura.
And softened.
“So you’re the little girl,” Elena said, her American accent sharp and cold. “The one who saved the ice boss. I’ve heard so much about you.”
Laura didn’t respond.
Elena smiled.
“Cat got your tongue? Or did Ethan finally tell you the truth about your father?”
“He told me.”
Elena’s smile widened.
“And yet here you are. Standing beside him. Protecting him.”
Laura took a step forward.
“I’m not protecting him. I’m protecting myself.”
Elena’s eyebrow rose.
“Explain.”
Laura reached into her clutch purse. She pulled out a folded document and held it up.
“This is a medical report. From your father’s autopsy. Did you know he had a heart condition? Aortic stenosis. It would have killed him within five years, even without the firefight.”
Elena’s smile faltered.
“What are you talking about?”
Laura took another step.
“I’m talking about the fact that your father was already dying. His own lieutenants knew it. They saw weakness. And they turned on him long before Ethan’s men ever fired a shot.”
She unfolded the document and held it out.
“These are the financial records showing that your father’s top men were embezzling from him. They let him walk into that firefight knowing he wouldn’t walk out. You’ve been blaming Ethan for years, Elena. But the people who actually killed your father? They’re standing right behind you. In your own organization.”
Elena’s face went white.
Her bodyguards shifted, hands moving toward their jackets.
But Ethan’s men moved faster.
Within seconds, the ballroom was filled with the click of safeties being released.
Elena looked around at the guns trained on her.
Then back at Laura.
“You’re lying.”
Laura shook her head.
“I’m a surgeon, Elena. I’ve held a hundred dying hearts in my hands. Your father’s heart was already failing. His empire was crumbling from the inside. You’ve been fighting the wrong enemy for six years.”
She folded the document and put it back in her purse.
“Now here’s what’s going to happen. You’re going to walk out of this hotel. You’re going to get on a plane back to Chicago. You’re going to forget the billion dollars you demanded—because your leverage just evaporated.”
Elena’s lip curled.
“Or what?”
Laura smiled.
“Or I release these records to every newspaper in the city. Your own people will turn on you the moment they find out you’ve been protecting the men who betrayed your father.”
She tilted her head.
“Just like mine was built on lies, Elena. Yours is too.”
The silence in the ballroom was absolute.
Elena stared at Laura for a long, long time.
Then she laughed.
It was a cold sound. Bitter.
“You’re more dangerous than he ever was,” she said, jerking her head toward Ethan.
Then she turned and walked out.
Her bodyguards followed.
The doors swung shut behind them.
Laura stood perfectly still until the sound of footsteps faded.
Then she exhaled.
