Chapter Nine: The Foundation Event
The Smith Foundation Hall was elegant.
Crystal chandeliers. Marble floors. Waiters in white gloves.
Khloe wore a simple black dress. Kept a low profile.
People talked about Jacob’s return. Some called him a genius. Others called him reckless.
She scanned the room.
Then she saw him.
Across the room. In a dark suit. Speaking with two businessmen.
He looked thinner. Dark circles under his eyes. But he stood tall.
He was still him. Jacob.
She looked away immediately.
Walked to the appetizer table. Pretended to choose between cheeses.
Then she heard it.
“You came.”
She turned slowly.
He stood there. Still. Tense. Waiting.
“I wasn’t sure I would.”
“It was my sister, wasn’t it?”
“She said you didn’t ask.”
“I didn’t. I thought you needed space.”
“So why are you here?”
“Because this event matters for the company’s image.” He paused. “But also because part of me still hopes to see you wherever I go.”
Khloe sighed.
“You could have told me the truth. Not your name. Not the money. But the truth.”
“I know.”
“And you let me walk away. You didn’t try to come back.”
“Trying would have meant pushing. I didn’t want to step into anything that was still yours.”
“I would have listened.” Her voice unsteady. “I was angry. But it wasn’t the end.”
Jacob took a deep breath.
“I didn’t come here to apologize again. Or to beg for another chance. I came to tell you that even if you don’t want anything moreβI’m grateful for everything.”
He held her gaze.
“You gave me back the part of myself I had lost. Before the masks. The contracts. The numbers. You reminded me what it’s like to just be someone.”
Khloe stayed quiet.
A single tear fell.
“I’m still hurt. But I also still remember the way you looked at me when I fell asleep on the couch. Things like that are hard to forget.”
Jacob smiled sadly.
“Maybe we just need more time.”
“Maybe.”
“Do you still have the ring?” he asked quietly.
She hesitated. Then raised her hand.
The simple platinum band he’d left for her.
“I tried to take it off. Something in me wouldn’t let me.”
His breath caught.
“Then I’ll wait. However long it takes.”
They stood there for a while.
No promises. No certainties.
Just two people finally understanding that maybe there was still a path.
