I Went To Visit My Wife’s Mother In The Hospital, But What I Heard Her Say About Me Turned My Entire Marriage Into A Crime Scene – Part 9

Chapter Nine: The New Beginning

They sold the penthouse.

Too many memories. Too much security. Too much of the old life.

They bought a house in Evanston. Modest. Four bedrooms. A garden. A porch swing.

No bodyguards.

No bulletproof windows.

No panic rooms.

Damon stepped down as CEO of Cross Industries. He stayed on as chairman. Less stress. More time at home.

He learned to garden. Tomatoes. Basil. Things that grew.

He learned to cook. Not well. But enthusiastically.

Vivian left her law firm. She started her own practice. Small. Boutique. Focused on helping women in abusive marriages.

She was good at it.

She understood control. Manipulation. The slow erosion of self-worth.

Because she had lived it.

One night, sitting on their porch, the stars bright above Evanston, Vivian leaned against Damon’s shoulder.

“Do you ever regret it? Staying with me?”

“Never.”

“Even after everything my family did?”

Damon kissed her forehead.

“Your family doesn’t define you. You define you.”

Vivian smiled.

It was the first real smile he had seen in months.

“Thank you. For fighting for us.”

“Thank you. For choosing us.”

They sat in silence.

The crickets sang.

A dog barked somewhere.

Somewhere else, a baby cried.

“I want to have a baby,” Vivian said.

Damon looked at her.

“Really?”

“Really. I’m thirty-six. My biological clock isn’t just ticking. It’s screaming.”

Damon laughed.

It was the first real laugh he had laughed in years.

“Then let’s have a baby.”

“Just like that?”

“Just like that.”

She kissed him.

And for the first time in their marriage, they made love without ghosts in the room.
