Chapter Sixteen: The Future
Morning brought clarity.
And with it, resolution.
If they were going to do this—truly do this—they would need to establish boundaries.
Expectations.
She couldn’t simply be absorbed into his world.
Not without maintaining some independence.
Some sense of self.
She found him in his study.
Already working despite the early hour.
He looked up as she entered.
His expression softening in a way that still surprised her.
“Good morning.”
He said, setting aside his papers.
“Did you sleep eventually?”
She took a seat across from him.
“We need to talk about how this works. Practically.”
He nodded.
Unsurprised by her business-like approach.
“I’m listening.”
“If we’re going to be together—”
She began.
“I need to maintain my own identity. Not just be an extension of you or your world.”
“What does that mean specifically?”
“I want to go back to school.”
She said.
The decision crystallizing as she spoke.
“I was studying nursing before Lily came along. I want to finish my degree.”
He considered this.
“It can be arranged. With proper security measures.”
“And I need your word that Lily will be raised normally. Or as normally as possible given the circumstances. School. Friends. Activities.”
“Of course.”
He leaned forward.
“I want her to have everything, Harper. Every advantage.”
“Every opportunity without being drawn into the dangerous aspects of your business.”
She clarified.
A shadow crossed his face.
“My legitimate enterprises will provide more than enough opportunities for her future.”
She took a deep breath.
“And one more thing. The most important thing.”
She met his eyes directly.
“If we do this—if I commit to you—I need to know I’m choosing it freely. That I can leave if I need to. And Lily will still be safe and cared for.”
He was silent for a long moment.
His expression unreadable.
“Then you would leave her?”
“No.”
She said firmly.
“Never. But I need to know that my relationship with you isn’t the price of her security. That she’s protected because she’s your family. Not because you and I are together.”
Understanding dawned in his eyes.
“You think I’m using her as leverage to keep you?”
“Are you?”
She challenged.
“No.”
The single word carried absolute conviction.
“Lily is my blood. She will always have my protection. My resources. My name, if you’ll allow it. Regardless of what happens between us.”
Relief washed through her.
“Then yes.”
She said simply.
“Yes to us. To trying this impossible thing.”
His smile was transformative.
Lighting his face in a way she’d never seen before.
He rose and came around the desk.
Pulling her to her feet and into his arms.
“You won’t regret this.”
He murmured against her hair.
“I’d better not.”
She replied with a lightness she was beginning to feel.
“I’ve heard you’re a dangerous man to cross.”
He laughed.
The sound rich and genuine.
“Only to my enemies. Never to those I love.”
The word hung between them.
Acknowledged, but not withdrawn.
Too soon to say it outright, perhaps.
But present nonetheless.
As if summoned by the shift in their relationship, Lily’s babble came through the baby monitor on Alessio’s desk.
He released her with obvious reluctance.
“Duty calls.”
She said, smiling.
“Go. I’ll join you shortly.”
He pressed a kiss to her forehead.
“We have time now.”
And as she went to retrieve her daughter—their daughter, in all the ways that truly mattered—she felt a peace she hadn’t known in years.
The path ahead wouldn’t be easy.
There would be dangers.
Complications.
Challenges unique to loving a man like Alessio Russo.
But for the first time since Lily was born, she wasn’t facing the world alone.
They had protection.
Security.
And yes, love.
A fierce, unexpected love that had blossomed in the most unlikely of circumstances.
All because a mafia boss had found a baby bottle in her bag.
She had collapsed in an alley, thinking she had nothing left to lose.
She had woken up with everything to gain.
The baby bottle sat on the kitchen counter now.
Empty.
Washed and waiting for the next feeding.
A reminder of where they started.
And how far they had come.
Lily gurgled in her arms, reaching for a strand of Harper’s hair.
Behind her, Alessio’s footsteps approached.
Strong.
Certain.
Home.
The word no longer echoed strangely.
It felt like truth.
Like the beginning of something she had never dared to imagine.
Alessio’s hand found the small of her back.
His lips brushed her temple.
“Good morning, Harper.”
She leaned into him.
Lily between them.
Safe.
“Good morning, Alessio.”
Outside, the world waited.
Dangerous and unpredictable.
But inside these walls, they were building something new.
Something worth fighting for.
And for the first time in her life, Harper Wilson wasn’t fighting alone.
She was fighting with.
And that made all the difference.
