Chapter 1

The Contract Wife
The neon sign outside Lou Mitchell’s Diner flickered against the freezing Chicago rain.
Inside, Penelope Hayes scrubbed coffee stains from a counter that had already been cleaned twice.
It was nearly two in the morning.
Her back hurt.
Her feet hurt.
And her bank account hurt even more.
At twenty-four years old, Penelope worked three jobs and still couldn’t keep up with the debt her older brother had left behind.
Three months ago, Jason disappeared.
He left nothing behind except a mountain of gambling debt and a trail of dangerous people demanding repayment.
One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Money Penelope would never be able to earn.
Not in ten years.
Not in twenty.
She sighed and checked the clock.
Almost closing time.
Then the diner door opened.
Two men in expensive suits walked in.
They weren’t customers.
Every instinct in her body told her to run.
But before she could move, one of them smiled.
“Miss Hayes, our employer would like a word.”
Chapter 2
The Most Dangerous Proposal
Forty minutes later, Penelope sat inside the tallest building she had ever entered.
Her hands trembled.
Across from her sat Mateo Romano.
The king of Chicago’s underworld.
A man whose name inspired fear in criminals and politicians alike.
His dark eyes studied her quietly.
“I don’t have the money,” Penelope blurted.
Mateo leaned back.
“I didn’t bring you here for money.”
Confusion crossed her face.
“Then why am I here?”
He slid a contract across the desk.
“I need a wife.”
Silence.
Penelope blinked.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
“What?”
“A marriage contract,” Mateo said calmly.
“Twelve months. Public appearances. Family events. Social functions.”
He paused.
“No romance.”
“No intimacy.”
“No emotional attachment.”
Penelope stared at him.
This had to be a joke.
But Mateo Romano didn’t look like a man who joked.
“Why me?”
His answer came immediately.
“Because you’re not interested in me.”
The words hit harder than she expected.
He continued.
“You’re practical. You need money. I need a wife. This is business.”
Business.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
Penelope should have refused.
Instead, she looked at the number written near the bottom of the contract.
$2,000,000.
Her breath caught.
That amount could change her life forever.
Slowly, she picked up the pen.
And signed.
Chapter 3
The Woman Nobody Saw
Three days later, Penelope stood inside a luxury penthouse larger than her entire apartment building.
She didn’t belong there.
She knew it.
Everyone else knew it too.
Especially the fashion stylist hired to prepare her for a charity gala.
The woman circled Penelope with obvious disapproval.
“We’ll need something that hides her figure.”
Penelope lowered her eyes.
She’d heard comments like that her entire life.
Too big.
Too plain.
Too much.
Never enough.
The stylist continued.
“We need to minimize these areas—”
“Stop.”
The room fell silent.
Mateo stood in the doorway.
His expression was cold.
Dangerously cold.
“There are no areas that need hiding.”
The stylist laughed nervously.
“Mr. Romano, I was only trying to—”
“You’re fired.”
The smile disappeared from her face.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
Mateo walked toward Penelope.
Every person in the room moved aside.
His gaze never left hers.
“You look beautiful.”
The words were simple.
Yet somehow they shattered every wall she’d built around herself.
For the first time in years…
Someone saw her.
Really saw her.
Chapter 4
The Sniper
The gala was perfect.
Until it wasn’t.
One second Penelope stood beside the penthouse window overlooking Lake Michigan.
The next—
CRACK!
Glass exploded inward.
A sniper bullet tore through the room.
Before Penelope could react, Mateo tackled her to the floor.
His body covered hers completely.
Shielding her.
Protecting her.
Risking everything.
Another bullet slammed into the wall.
Security rushed inside.
Chaos erupted.
But Mateo never moved.
He only held her tighter.
As if letting go wasn’t an option.
Later, after the danger passed, he carried her to safety.
And for the first time since meeting him…
Penelope saw fear in his eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for her.
Chapter 5
The Confession
That night changed everything.
Inside the quiet safety of a hidden estate, Mateo cleaned a small cut on Penelope’s shoulder.
Neither spoke.
The silence felt heavy.
Dangerous.
Finally Penelope whispered:
“You didn’t have to save me.”
Mateo froze.
“You could have found another wife.”
His jaw tightened.
Slowly he lifted her chin.
“No.”
His voice was rough.
Raw.
Painfully honest.
“There is no other wife.”
Penelope’s heart stopped.
Mateo’s dark eyes burned into hers.
“I thought you would be easy to ignore.”
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“I was wrong.”
He moved closer.
Closer.
Close enough that she could feel his breath.
“I think about you every minute.”
His hand brushed her cheek.
“You are the first thing I look for in a room.”
Another step closer.
“The first voice I want to hear.”
Tears filled Penelope’s eyes.
“Mateo…”
“I love you.”
The confession shattered the last wall between them.
“I love your kindness.”
“I love your courage.”
“I love the way you see beauty in everyone.”
His voice softened.
“And I love every part of you.”
For a moment neither moved.
Then Penelope kissed him.
And the fake marriage finally became real.
Chapter 6
Choosing Love
When Dominic Costa kidnapped Penelope’s brother and demanded she betray Mateo, she faced an impossible choice.
Family.
Or the man she loved.
Most people expected her to choose blood.
Instead…
She chose trust.
Walking into Mateo’s office, she placed the burner phone on his desk.
“Costa has Jason.”
The room went silent.
“He wants me to steal your ledgers.”
Mateo’s expression darkened.
But Penelope continued.
“I couldn’t do it.”
“Why?”
She met his eyes.
Because I love you.
Three simple words.
Yet they meant everything.
Mateo crossed the room and pulled her into his arms.
In that moment, he realized something.
Power.
Money.
Empire.
None of it mattered.
Only her.
And anyone who threatened her would learn exactly how dangerous love could be.
Chapter 7
Queen of His Heart
Three weeks later, the war was over.
Costa was gone.
Jason was safe.
Chicago belonged to Mateo Romano.
Yet none of those victories mattered as much as the woman waiting in his penthouse.
Penelope stood beside the fireplace when Mateo entered.
Without speaking, he threw their marriage contract into the flames.
The paper burned quickly.
Turning to ash.
Then he dropped to one knee.
A diamond ring sparkled in his hand.
This time there was no contract.
No business arrangement.
No conditions.
Only love.
“Marry me for real, Penelope.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Again?”
Mateo smiled.
His first genuine smile in years.
“Again.”
And this time…
Forever.
The End. ❤️
