The Arrogant CEO Couldn’t Stand Seeing His Secretary With Another Billionaire – Part 28

Chapter 28: The Realization

Martina sat in her office at Ashford Industries.

All glass and modern furniture and a view that would have impressed her three months ago.

She tried to focus on the quarterly operations report in front of her.

She couldn’t.

Because sitting on her desk was an email from Elena Rodriguez at the Cornerstone Foundation. Describing an opportunity that sounded custom-designed for her dreams.

An opportunity to run educational literacy programs. To use her strategic skills for social impact. To make a difference instead of just making money.

An opportunity that paid more than Marcus was paying her.

An opportunity that Elena had learned about from an anonymous donor who’d specifically recommended Martina for the position.

Martina knew who that donor was.

Jordan.

Even now, after three months of silence. After respecting every boundary she’d set. After letting her go completely.

He was still thinking about her.

Still trying to give her what she needed.

Still putting her dreams ahead of his own desires.

It was infuriating.

It was heartbreaking.

It was exactly what she’d needed him to do.

A knock.

Marcus Ashford appeared in her doorway, holding two cups of coffee.

“Thought you could use a break. You’ve been staring at that screen for twenty minutes without moving.”

Martina smiled, closing the email.

“Just thinking.”

Marcus sat in the chair across from her desk. The same position she’d occupied for five years in Jordan’s office.

Always the assistant. Never the equal.

“About whether I made the right choice,” she admitted.

Marcus’s expression didn’t change, but something flickered in his eyes.

“Are we talking about the job or about Jordan Blackwell?”

“Both? Neither? I don’t know.”

Martina rubbed her temples.

“Marcus, can I ask you something? And will you be honest with me?”

“Always.”

“Why did you pursue me? Was it really because you saw my potential? Or was it because I was Jordan’s and you wanted to win?”

The silence stretched long enough to be an answer.

“Both,” Marcus said finally.

And she appreciated his honesty, even as it confirmed her suspicions.

“I saw your brilliance at that first benefit dinner. Saw you handling donors and managing logistics while Jordan was in London, thinking you were just doing busy work. I saw someone being wasted.”

“And yes, part of me saw an opportunity to take something valuable from Jordan Blackwell.”

He leaned forward, his expression serious.

“But Martina, you’re more than a trophy or a rivalry between two old enemies. You’re extraordinary. You’ve transformed operations here in three months. My entire executive team is impressed with you.”

“You’ve earned this position. Earned every dollar I’m paying you. Earned the respect you receive here.”
