She Treated The Mafia Boss’s Wound At Midnight, But When He Ordered “Bring Me That Woman,” She Realized The Man Who Broke Her Had Been Guarding Her From The Dark – Part 4

Chapter Four: The File Under The Floor

Damian slept.

Elena did not.

She waited until the house quieted, then entered his study.

It was the only room with proof of a person inside.

Books.

A cracked chessboard.

A single photograph turned face down.

She knew before touching it.

Saint Agnes Cathedral.

Seven years ago.

Elena in a cream dress.

Damian in a black suit.

His eyes on her like the world ended at her shoulder.

She set the photo down.

Then she saw the raised floorboard beneath the desk.

Small.

Precise.

Hidden for someone who knew where to kneel.

She used the scalpel from her boot.

Under the board was a black folder wrapped in oilcloth.

Her name was written across it.

ELENA MARA VALE.

She opened it.

Reports.

Hospital promotions.

Board complaints.

Surgical publications.

Security photos.

Her father’s death notice.

The harassment case against a senior surgeon who had disappeared from her hospital two weeks after cornering her in an elevator.

Elena’s stomach turned.

Damian had not vanished.

He had watched from the dark.

A smaller envelope sat at the bottom.

Inside were three things.

A copy of her father’s gambling debt.

A grainy photograph of him outside Saint Agnes speaking to a Varga soldier.

A letter in her father’s handwriting.

Elena read the first line.

I am sorry, Lena. I thought I could fix it.

Her throat closed.

Behind her, Damian spoke.

“You were not meant to find that alone.”

She turned.

He stood in the doorway, pale but upright, one hand braced against the frame.

“You kept a file on me.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me.”

“Yes.”

“You interfered.”

“Yes.”

“Do you know another answer?”

“No.”

She threw the folder onto the desk.

“You do not get credit for protecting me after destroying me.”

“I know.”

“You let me think you hated me.”

“Yes.”

“You called me a mistake.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Damian looked at the photograph.

“Your father owed the Varga family two million dollars. He gave them our meeting place. Saint Agnes.”

Elena’s body went cold.

“No.”

“They planned to take you and use you against me.”

“No.”

“I found out too late.”

She shook her head.

“You should have told me.”

“Yes.”

“You should have trusted me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

He looked back at her.

“I was twenty-six and arrogant enough to think cruelty was safer than truth.”

The line landed hard.

Too hard.

She picked up the photograph of her father.

Her hand did not shake.

“What happened to him?”

“I gave him a choice. Prison or exile.”

“And me?”

“I gave you pain.”

“At least you’re honest now.”

“It comes late.”

“It does.”

A shout rose from downstairs.

Then gunfire.

Damian reached behind the bookshelf for a pistol.

Elena took it first.

His eyes widened.

“You cannot shoot.”

“I can aim.”

“Not the same thing.”

She checked the weapon with clumsy certainty.

“You can barely stand.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

She stepped past him.

“This time, you stay behind me.”
