Chapter 5: The Economics Of Neglect
“Let go of her,” Henry repeated. His voice was completely devoid of its usual gentle warmth, replaced by a freezing, unyielding authority.
Diane froze, her fingers still clamped around Lily’s thin jacket. She looked up at the massive man blocking her path, her eyes darting nervously toward the front windows. She realized instantly that she was severely outmatched.
“You have absolutely no legal right to tell me what to do,” Diane hissed, though she defensively dropped her hand from Lily’s arm. “She is my ward. Come on, Lily. We are leaving right now.”
Lily didn’t look at Henry. She ducked her head, her small shoulders hunched, and scurried rapidly out the heavy glass door right behind her aunt. The brass bell chimed aggressively as the door slammed shut, leaving Henry standing alone in the sudden silence of the diner.
Outside the window, Diane’s rusted sedan backed out of its parking space and sped around the corner.
Near the front window, Angela Reeves finally picked up her yellow legal pad. She slid out of her booth and walked slowly toward the back corner where Henry was standing over his cooling cup of coffee.
“What you saw just now, Mr. Caldwell,” Angela said quietly, sliding into the vinyl seat across from him. “That is the exact pattern.”
Henry sat down heavily. “She treats that child like stolen property.”
“It is not blind rage,” Angela explained, her pen tapping rhythmically against her notepad. “It is entirely about management. Diane is managing an asset. And the critical question we need to legally answer is what Lily’s continued presence is actually worth to her aunt financially.”
Angela let that heavy, ugly truth settle over the table for a long moment.
“This may be vastly more than simple neglect, Mr. Caldwell,” Angela stated softly. “It may be financial coercion wearing the acceptable face of legal guardianship.”
Henry reached into his breast pocket and slowly pulled out the creased dance ticket. He stared at it, his jaw tight.
“Tell me exactly what we have to do,” Henry said.
