The Exhausted Waitress Accidentally Spoke A Secret Mafia Dialect, And The Most Dangerous Man In New York Locked The Doors – Part 9

Chapter 9: The Looming War

The heavily armored black sedan sped aggressively through Manhattan’s crowded, glowing streets. Lucas’s sharp face was illuminated intermittently by the passing yellow streetlights as he spoke rapidly and furiously on his encrypted phone in harsh, guttural Sicilian dialect.

Arya sat paralyzed beside him in the spacious back seat. She was still trembling violently from the horrifying encounter at the gallery. The brutal reality of her new, terrifying life was crashing down on her fragile shoulders with a crushing, suffocating weight.

“They will make a violent move tonight,” Lucas announced after sharply ending the call. He turned to face her fully in the dim, leather-scented interior of the car. “My deep contacts just confirmed that Giani has already sent for heavily armed reinforcements from their Brooklyn operations. They are fully mobilizing against us as we speak.”

Arya fiercely clutched the edge of the leather seat beneath her. The beautiful, incredibly expensive dress suddenly felt exactly like a cheap costume in a tragic play where she didn’t know any of her lines.

“I simply do not understand why they would actively care about me after all this time,” Arya pleaded, her voice cracking with pure terror. “I am absolutely nobody, Lucas. I am just a broke college student who waited tables until three weeks ago.”

Lucas’s severe expression softened slightly, a massive rarity she had only previously witnessed when he sat by her grandmother’s bedside in the hospice facility.

“You are the only living daughter of Franco Cardellini,” Lucas explained gently, his eyes filled with dark sorrow. “Your father had devastating, absolute evidence of the D’Angelos’ massive betrayal hidden safely away before his tragic death. It is evidence they firmly believe died with him and your mother on that burning ferry.”

The realization struck her like a brutal physical blow to the chest.

“And now they firmly think I might have access to whatever evidence my father had,” she whispered in horror.

The complex puzzle pieces finally, terrifyingly clicked into place in her mind as she suddenly remembered the small, ornate safety deposit box key her dying grandmother had pressed desperately into her hand during their very last visit.

The armored car pulled sharply into a heavily secured, underground parking garage beneath a completely unmarked, brutalist concrete building in the financial district. Five identical black SUVs were already waiting in the shadows with their massive engines rumbling quietly.

“This is exactly where I deeply need to ask something incredibly difficult of you, Arya,” Lucas said, taking her trembling hand in his with unexpected, breathtaking gentleness.
