The Police Declared The Missing ER Nurse Dead. Three Months Later, A Ruthless Mafia Boss Splintered Open A Basement Door And Found Her Alive – PART 7

Chapter 7: The Decoy and the Trap

The fragile peace we had built shattered exactly two weeks later.

I was sitting in Franco’s home office, reviewing a pediatric file, when he walked in. His face was a mask of cold fury.

“Roberto made contact,” Franco stated, closing the heavy oak doors. “Through a neutral intermediary. He wants to negotiate. He offered me the names and supply routes of the Castellano family in exchange for ten million dollars and safe passage to South America.”

The blood drained from my face. “It’s a trap.”

“Of course it is,” Franco agreed, leaning against his desk. “But it is also the first time he has surfaced with a concrete location. The meeting is tonight at an abandoned warehouse by the docks. I have already agreed.”

I stood up so fast my chair tipped backward. “Tonight? You already agreed? And you are just now telling me?”

“I am telling you because you deserve to know,” Franco said defensively.

“You made a unilateral decision about the man who tortured me without consulting me!” I shouted, pacing the room. “You just decided to walk into an ambush!”

“I am trying to protect you!” Franco fired back, his voice booming. “If I included you in the planning, you would demand to be there. And that is absolutely not happening. I will not put you in the crossfire.”

“I am not asking to go to the warehouse!” I shot back, stepping directly into his personal space. “But I refuse to sit blindly in this house waiting to find out if the man I love gets a bullet in his head!”

The words slipped out before I could stop them. The man I love.

Franco froze. The anger instantly evaporated from his eyes, replaced by a profound, grounding shock. He let out a ragged breath and pulled me against his chest, burying his face in my hair.

“You win,” Franco whispered fiercely. “You won’t be in the dark. Nicholas is taking you to a secure high-rise condo downtown. You will have full access to our surveillance drones and audio feeds. You will be my overwatch. If you see something wrong, you call it out.”

Three hours later, I was sitting in a dark, reinforced condo overlooking the city. A massive bank of screens illuminated the room. Nicholas stood behind me, a silent bodyguard.

On the main monitor, I watched Franco’s black SUVs pull into the abandoned warehouse district. Franco stepped out, flanked by four heavily armed guards. He walked into the center of the empty warehouse, the audio feed transmitting the hollow echo of his boots.

Ten minutes later, a silver Mercedes pulled in. Roberto stepped out.

He looked terrible. He was thin, unshaven, and twitching with paranoid energy.

“Franco,” Roberto’s voice crackled through my headset. “I didn’t think you would actually show.”

“Let’s skip the emotional reunion,” Franco’s voice was deadly calm. “Hand over the flash drive, and my men will let you walk to the airport.”

Roberto paced back and forth, staying ten feet away. “You took everything from me. My reputation, my inheritance. All because of that pathetic little nurse who wouldn’t give me the time of day.”

My stomach churned. Nicholas placed a reassuring hand on the back of my chair.

“Where is she, Franco?” Roberto sneered, his eyes darting into the shadows. “Is she warming your bed? Did you bring her here to watch my humiliation?”

“She has nothing to do with this,” Franco replied coldly.

Roberto smiled. It was an ugly, broken expression. “You always were arrogant. You think I care about safe passage? I just wanted you out in the open.”

I quickly scanned the secondary monitors. Camera four showed the exterior perimeter. Two dark, unmarked vans had pulled up down the block. But the men pouring out of them weren’t moving toward the warehouse to ambush Franco.

They were moving toward Franco’s empty decoy van parked on the street. The van that Roberto thought I was waiting in.

“Nicholas!” I screamed, pointing at the screen. “He isn’t attacking Franco! He’s targeting the decoy van! He thinks I’m inside it!”

Nicholas grabbed his radio. “Boss! Hostiles moving on the decoy package! It’s a misdirection!”

Inside the warehouse, Franco’s posture instantly shifted. He didn’t even draw his weapon. He just looked at his brother with pure pity.

“You really thought I would bring her here?” Franco asked. He pressed a button on his key fob. The back doors of the decoy van outside popped open, revealing nothing but empty seats and blinking camera equipment.

Roberto’s face contorted in absolute rage. “KILL HIM!” he screamed to his hidden snipers.

But Franco’s men were already moving. Having been alerted to the flankers, Franco’s guards laid down heavy suppressive fire. The warehouse erupted into controlled chaos.

Roberto turned to run, sprinting toward the side exit. But Franco was faster. He tackled his brother to the concrete, driving his knee into Roberto’s spine and violently twisting his arms behind his back.

“It’s over, Roberto,” Franco growled, securing the zip-ties. “Your reign of terror is finished.”

I slumped back in my chair, tears of profound relief streaming down my face. The monster was finally caged.
