Sister-In-Law Humiliated a Poor Maid With Scalding Tea—Then the Mafia Boss Claimed Her as His Guest

Chapter 1: The Tea That Changed Everything

The tea looked beautiful for a fraction of a second.

Golden liquid sparkled beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Hawthorne Charity Gala, suspended in midair like molten amber.

Then it landed.

Adeline Carter gasped as the scalding tea splashed across her shoulder.

Pain shot through her body.

The silver serving tray slipped from her hands and crashed against the polished marble floor.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

Four hundred guests turned their heads.

For one brief moment, silence fell over the grand hall.

Then came laughter.

“Oh dear,” Cordelia Voss said loudly, covering her mouth with fake concern. “Could you be any more clumsy?”

The guests immediately looked at Adeline.

Not at the woman who had intentionally bumped her.

Not at the hand that had caused the accident.

At Adeline.

Exactly as Cordelia intended.

Standing beside her daughter, Bernardette Voss calmly sipped her champagne.

Neither woman looked remotely guilty.

Instead, they wore the expressions of people enjoying a carefully planned performance.

And Adeline was the star of the show.

Her blouse clung to her skin.

The burn throbbed beneath the fabric.

Yet she said nothing.

That was what surprised everyone.

Most people would have cried.

Others would have protested.

Some might have exposed the truth.

But Adeline simply bent down and picked up the fallen tray.

As if humiliation were nothing new.

As if pain had become an old companion.

Because it had.

For two years after her husband’s death, life had taught her exactly how little sympathy the world offered to a woman standing alone.

She had learned to endure.

To survive.

To remain kind when bitterness seemed easier.

Unfortunately for the Voss family…

Someone was watching.

High above the ballroom, on a private balcony overlooking the event, Royce Hawthorne slowly lowered his glass.

His dark eyes never left the woman below.

The entire ballroom feared him.

Some respected him.

Others hated him.

But nobody ignored him.

Royce Hawthorne was power.

The kind of power that never needed to announce itself.

The kind that entered a room and made conversations stop.

The kind that could destroy fortunes with a single phone call.

Yet at this moment, he wasn’t looking at politicians.

He wasn’t looking at business leaders.

He wasn’t looking at wealthy socialites desperate for his attention.

He was watching a servant.

A servant who had just been humiliated.

And refused to humiliate herself in return.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Beside him, Marlo quietly noticed the change in his employer’s expression.

After twelve years, he could count on one hand the number of times Royce had shown genuine interest in a stranger.

“Should I look into her?” Marlo asked softly.

Royce remained silent for several seconds.

Below them, Adeline continued gathering broken pieces from the floor while wealthy guests whispered around her.

Not one person offered help.

Not one person stepped forward.

Royce’s jaw tightened.

“Find out who she is.”

Marlo nodded immediately.

He knew that tone.

Something had already begun.

Neither of them understood how important that moment would become.

Because by the end of the night…

Royce Hawthorne would discover that the woman everyone treated like a servant was connected to a debt he had carried for nearly fifteen years.

A debt of blood.

A debt of life.

And once Royce Hawthorne decided someone was under his protection…

The entire city would have to accept it.

Whether they liked it or not.

To be continued…
