A Female Billionaire Asked the Single Dad for a Baby—But Her Real Reason Shocked Him – Part 15

Vivian saw his hesitation and pushed at his arm weakly. “Go,” she whispered. “Go see her.” He crossed the room on shaking legs and watched as the nurses measured Emma, weighed her, wrapped her in a blanket. She was so small, barely 6 lb, with a shock of dark hair and lungs that worked just fine based on the volume of her crying.

“She’s healthy,” one of the nurses said, smiling. “10 fingers, 10 toes, strong heartbeat. She’s perfect.” Adrian reached out and touched Emma’s tiny hand, and her fingers curled reflexively around his. Something broke open in his chest, a flood of love so intense it staggered him. “Hi, sweetheart,” he whispered. “I’m your dad.

” Emma stopped crying for just a moment, her eyes dark and unfocused, turning in the direction of his voice. Then she started wailing again, and Adrian laughed through his tears. They brought Emma over to Vivian, placing her on her chest, and Vivian wrapped her arms around the baby and wept. Adrian sat beside them, one hand on Vivian’s shoulder, the other touching Emma’s impossibly soft hair, and felt the weight of the last year crash over him. They’d done it.

Against all odds, through all the fear and doubt and grief, they’d actually done it. “She’s beautiful,” Vivian whispered, staring down at Emma like she couldn’t believe she was real. She looks like you. She has your nose. Adrian looked closer. “Poor kid.” Vivian laughed, exhausted and radiant. “I love you.” “I love you, too.” “Both of you.

” They stayed like that for a long time, the three of them, until the nurses came to take Emma for more tests, and Vivian finally allowed herself to sleep. Adrian sat in the chair beside the bed, watching Vivian’s chest rise and fall, and tried to remember how to breathe. When the sun came up, they brought Emma back, and Adrian held his daughter for the first time.

She was so light, so fragile, and he was terrified he’d break her. But she settled against his chest, her tiny body warm and solid, and he felt something click into place. This was his family. Messy, complicated, built from broken pieces, but it was his. Later that morning, Adrian called Eli and told him the news.

His son whooped so loudly that the neighbor probably heard. “Can I come see her?” Eli asked. “Yeah, I’ll come get you in a couple hours.” When Eli arrived at the hospital, he was practically vibrating with excitement. He burst into the room, skidded to a stop when he saw Vivian in the bed, and immediately became quiet and careful.

“Hey, buddy,” Vivian said, smiling tiredly. “Come meet your sister.” Eli approached slowly, staring at the bundle in Vivian’s arms like it might explode. “She’s so small.” “She is, but she’s tough, just like you.” “Can I hold her?” Adrian helped Eli into a chair and carefully transferred Emma into his arms, supporting her head.

Eli held perfectly still, his eyes wide, staring down at his baby sister like she was made of glass. “Hi, Emma,” he whispered. “I’m Eli. I’m your big brother. I’m going to teach you stuff and protect you and make sure nobody’s mean to you.” Emma yawned, and Eli gasped. “Did you see that?” “She yawned.” Adrian and Vivian exchanged a look, and Adrian felt his throat tighten. This was it.

This was everything he’d been afraid to hope for. Over the next 2 days, they settled into the strange new reality of being parents to a newborn. Emma was a good baby. She slept in short bursts, ate well, and only cried when she needed something, but the exhaustion was immediate and crushing. Vivian was recovering from labor, her body sore and depleted, and Adrian divided his time between taking care of her and taking care of Emma, and trying to remember to eat and sleep himself.

They went home on Saturday morning, and the house felt different with Emma in it, fuller, louder, more alive. Eli appointed himself Emma’s official protector, hovering nearby whenever she cried and reporting to Adrian about every sound she made. “She sneezed three times,” he announced one afternoon. “Is that normal?” “Completely normal.

” “And she made a weird face when she pooped.” “Also normal.” “Being a baby sounds gross.” “It kind of is.” But despite the exhaustion and the chaos, something settled over the house. A sense of completion, like they’d finally become what they were always supposed to be. One night, about a week after they brought Emma home, Adrian found Vivian standing in the nursery, holding their sleeping daughter, and crying quietly.

“Hey,” he said softly, coming up beside her. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing’s wrong. I just” She looked down at Emma. “I didn’t think I’d get this again. A second chance. I was so sure I’d lost my shot at being a mother.” “You never lost it. You’re a mother. You’ve always been one.” “I know, but this” She gestured at Emma, at the nursery, at the life they’d built.

“This is more than I ever thought I’d have.” Adrian put his arm around her shoulders. “We’re pretty lucky, aren’t we?” “Yeah, we really are.” They stood there together in the dim light, watching Emma sleep, and Adrian thought about the woman who’d knocked on his door in the rain all those months ago, the desperate stranger asking for the impossible.

He’d said yes without knowing what it would cost, what it would give him, how completely it would change everything. And he’d do it again in a heartbeat. “Adrian?” Vivian said quietly. “Yeah?” “Thank you.” “For what?” “For taking a chance on me. On us.” He kissed the side of her head. “Best decision I ever made.” Emma stirred in Vivian’s arms, making a small sound, and they both froze, waiting to see if she’d wake up.

But she settled back into sleep, and they carefully transferred her to the crib. As they left the nursery, Vivian took Adrian’s hand. “I want to marry you.” Adrian stopped in the hallway. “What?” “I want to marry you. I want us to be a real family, official.” “We are a real family.” “I know, but” “I want it to be legal.

I want the world to know that you and Eli and Emma, you’re mine, and I’m yours.” Adrian stared at her, his heart pounding. “Is that a proposal?” “I don’t know. Maybe. Is it working?” He laughed and pulled her close. “Yeah, it’s working.” “So, is that a yes?” “That’s a yes.” Vivian kissed him, and it was different from every other kiss they’d shared.

It was a promise, a commitment, a declaration that they were choosing this, choosing each other, every single day. When they finally pulled apart, Vivian was smiling wider than Adrian had ever seen. “We’re getting married,” she said, like she couldn’t quite believe it. “Yeah, we are.” “This is insane.” “Completely and perfect.

” “Yeah,” Adrian agreed, wrapping his arms around her. “It really is.” They got married in October, 6 weeks after Emma was born, in a small ceremony in the backyard of their home. It wasn’t the kind of wedding Vivian’s world expected. There was no cathedral, no guest list of 500, no designer gown that cost more than Adrian’s van.

Just 30 people who actually mattered. Adrian’s handful of friends, a few neighbors, Vivian’s assistant Monica, who’d become something close to family, and Margaret Chen, who’d finally come around after meeting Emma and realizing that Adrian wasn’t going anywhere. Eli served as best man, taking his duties so seriously that he’d practiced his ring-bearing walk for 3 days straight.
